Reefs being expanded off SC’s south coast

Two artificial reefs off South Carolina’s south coast are going to be expanded.

By next summer, a number of armored personnel carriers from the Vietnam era will be dumped offshore to expand existing reefs about 12 miles off the mouth of Port Royal Sound.

The project is a joint effort of the state Department of Natural Resources, the South Carolina Army National Guard, the town of Port Royal and the city of Beaufort.

The reef will provide fish habitat which will attract fishermen and divers.
